Renewable Energy Certificates
Once you have decided on what renewable energy option that best suits your needs we would advise you to investigate whether you are eligible for a "renewable energy certificate. For every MWh (1,000 units) you generate you can claim a single Renewable Obligation Certificate (ROC) which you can get paid for, irrespective of if you use that energy in your own property or export it to the grid.
The ROC scheme works by placing an annual obligation on all electricity suppliers in the UK to demonstrate to the Gov-ernment that they have purchased a percentage of their electricity from Renewable Sources. The Government set the value of a ROC at £30 in 2002 when the Order was introduced. This price increases each year with inflation and for this year (April 07 to March 08) the price is £34.30. However at present there is a shortage of renewable energy generated compared to the annual target and therefore the market price for a ROC is in fact higher than this.
